바다에서 짐승이 올라오는데, 용이 그에게 자기 권세를 주다. (1-10) 어린양 같은 두 뿔을 가졌으나 용처럼 말하는 또 다른 짐승. (11-15) 그것이 모든 이로 하여금 그 형상을 경배하게 하고, 그것에 헌신된 자로서 그 표를 받게 강요하다. (16-18)

16 And he causeth all, both small and great ㆍ, rich and poor ㆍ, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand ㆍ, or in their foreheads:	16 And he gives to all, small and great, the poor and those who have wealth, the free and those who are not free, a mark on their right hand or on their brows;	16 저가 모든 자 곧 작은 자나 큰 자나 부자나 빈궁한 자나 자유한 자나 종들로 그 오른손에나 이마에 표를 받게 하고

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.	17 So that no man might be able to do trade but he who has the mark, even the name of the beast or the number of his name.	17 누구든지 이 표를 가진 자 외에는 매매를 못하게 하니 이 표는 곧 짐승의 이름이나 그 이름의 수라

영문학의 위대한 고전인 KJV 영어 성경의 영어(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
