11장 칭의

Of Justification

1. Those whom God effectually calls, he also freely justifies,¹ not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous;² not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ’s sake alone;³ not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing Christ’s active obedience unto the whole law, and passive obedience in his death for their whole and sole righteousness by faith,⁴ which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God.⁵

1. 하나님은 효력 있게 부르시는 사람들을 또한 값없이 의롭다 하신다.¹ 이는 그들 안에 의를 주입하심으로써가 아니라 그들의 죄를 용서하시고 그들 자신을 의롭다고 여기시며 받아들이심으로써 이루어진다.² 그들 안에서 이루어진 일이나 그들이 행한 일 때문이 아니라 오직 그리스도 때문이다.³ 하나님은 믿음 자체나 믿는 행위나 그 밖의 어떤 복음적 순종을 그들의 의로 전가하지 않으시고, 온 율법에 대한 그리스도의 능동적 순종과 죽음 가운데 이루신 수동적 순종을 믿음으로 그들의 온전하고 유일한 의로 전가하신다.⁴ 이 믿음은 그들에게서 난 것이 아니라 하나님의 선물이다.⁵

로마서 4:5-8

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

5 일을 아니할찌라도 경건치 아니한 자를 의롭다 하시는 이를 믿는 자에게는 그의 믿음을 의로 여기시나니

6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

고린도전서 1:30-31

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

로마서 5:17-19

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

17 한 사람의 범죄를 인하여 사망이 그 한 사람으로 말미암아 왕노릇 하였은즉 더욱 은혜와 의의 선물을 넘치게 받는 자들이 한 분 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 생명 안에서 왕노릇 하리로다

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

빌립보서 3:8-9

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

8 또한 모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상함을 인함이라 내가 그를 위하여 모든 것을 잃어버리고 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻고

9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

에베소서 2:8-10

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

요한복음 1:12

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

로마서 5:17

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

2. Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification;⁶ yet is not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, but works by love.⁷

2. 이처럼 그리스도와 그분의 의를 받아들이고 의지하는 믿음만이 칭의의 유일한 도구이다.⁶ 그러나 의롭다 하심을 받은 사람 안에서 믿음은 홀로 있지 않고, 구원에 속한 다른 모든 은혜와 언제나 함께 있다. 그 믿음은 죽은 믿음이 아니라 사랑으로 역사하는 믿음이다.⁷

3. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those who are justified; and did, by the sacrifice of himself in the blood of his cross, undergoing in their stead the penalty due to them, make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to God’s justice in their behalf;⁸ yet, in as much as he was given by the Father for them, and his obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead, and both freely, not for anything in them,⁹ their justification is only of free grace, that both the exact justice and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.¹⁰

3. 그리스도는 순종과 죽음을 통하여 의롭다 하심을 받는 모든 사람의 빚을 온전히 갚으셨다. 또한 십자가에서 피 흘려 자신을 희생하시고 그들이 마땅히 받을 형벌을 대신 받으심으로, 그들을 위하여 하나님의 공의에 합당하고 실제적이며 완전한 만족을 드리셨다.⁸ 그러나 성부께서 그들을 위하여 그리스도를 주셨고, 그리스도의 순종과 만족을 그들을 대신한 것으로 받아들이셨으며, 이 두 가지 모두 그들 안에 있는 무엇 때문이 아니라 값없이 이루어졌으므로,⁹ 그들의 칭의는 오직 값없는 은혜에서 나온다. 이는 죄인을 의롭다 하시는 일에서 하나님의 엄정한 공의와 풍성한 은혜가 함께 영광을 받게 하려는 것이다.¹⁰

로마서 8:32

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

32 자기 아들을 아끼지 아니하시고 우리 모든 사람을 위하여 내어주신 이가 어찌 그 아들과 함께 모든 것을 우리에게 은사로 주지 아니하시겠느뇨

고린도후서 5:21

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

21 하나님이 죄를 알지도 못하신 자로 우리를 대신하여 죄를 삼으신 것은 우리로 하여금 저의 안에서 하나님의 의가 되게 하려 하심이니라

로마서 3:26

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

26 곧 이 때에 자기의 의로우심을 나타내사 자기도 의로우시며 또한 예수 믿는 자를 의롭다 하려 하심이니라

에베소서 1:6-7

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

6 이는 그의 사랑하시는 자 안에서 우리에게 거저 주시는바 그의 은혜의 영광을 찬미하게 하려는 것이라

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

에베소서 2:7

7 That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

7 이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이니라

4. God did from all eternity decree to justify all the elect,¹¹ and Christ did in the fullness of time die for their sins, and rise again for their justification;¹² nevertheless, they are not justified personally, until the Holy Spirit in time does actually apply Christ to them.¹³

4. 하나님은 영원부터 모든 택하신 자들을 의롭다 하기로 작정하셨으며,¹¹ 그리스도는 때가 차자 그들의 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 그들의 칭의를 위하여 다시 살아나셨다.¹² 그럼에도 성령께서 때가 되어 그리스도를 그들에게 실제로 적용하시기 전까지, 그들 개인이 의롭다 하심을 받는 것은 아니다.¹³

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

5. God continues to forgive the sins of those that are justified,¹⁴ and although they can never fall from the state of justification,¹⁵ yet they may, by their sins, fall under God’s fatherly displeasure;¹⁶ and in that condition they usually do not have the light of his countenance restored to them, until they humble themselves, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.¹⁷

5. 하나님은 의롭다 하신 사람들의 죄를 계속 용서하신다.¹⁴ 그들은 칭의의 상태에서 결코 떨어져 나갈 수 없으나,¹⁵ 죄 때문에 아버지이신 하나님의 노여움 아래 놓일 수 있다.¹⁶ 그러한 상태에서는 대개 자신을 낮추고 용서를 구하며 믿음과 회개를 새롭게 하기까지 하나님의 얼굴빛을 다시 누리지 못한다.¹⁷

마태복음 26:75

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

75 이에 베드로가 예수의 말씀에 닭 울기 전에 네가 세번 나를 부인하리라 하심이 생각나서 밖에 나가서 심히 통곡하니라

6. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament.¹⁸

6. 구약 시대 신자들의 칭의는 이 모든 점에서 신약 시대 신자들의 칭의와 하나이며 동일하였다.¹⁸
