16장 선행

Of Good Works

1. Good works are only such as God has commanded in his Holy Word,¹ and not such as without the warrant thereof are devised by men out of blind zeal, or upon any pretense of good intentions.²

1. 선행은 하나님께서 자신의 거룩한 말씀에서 명령하신 것들뿐이다.¹ 말씀의 근거 없이 맹목적인 열심이나 선한 의도라는 구실로 사람이 고안한 것들은 선행이 아니다.²

2. These good works, done in obedience to God’s commandments, are the fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith;³ and by them believers manifest their thankfulness,⁴ strengthen their assurance,⁵ edify their brethren, adorn the profession of the gospel,⁶ stop the mouths of the adversaries, and glorify God,⁷ whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto,⁸ that having their fruit unto holiness they may have the end eternal life.⁹

2. 하나님의 계명에 순종하여 행하는 이러한 선행은 참되고 살아 있는 믿음의 열매와 증거이다.³ 신자들은 선행으로 감사를 나타내며,⁴ 자신의 확신을 굳게 하고,⁵ 형제들을 세우며 복음의 고백을 아름답게 하고,⁶ 대적자들의 입을 막으며 하나님께 영광을 돌린다.⁷ 신자들은 하나님의 작품이며, 이 선행을 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 창조되었다.⁸ 이는 그들이 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺고 그 마지막인 영생을 얻게 하려는 것이다.⁹

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

9 이런 것이 없는 자는 소경이라 원시치 못하고 그의 옛 죄를 깨끗케 하심을 잊었느니라

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

10 그러므로 형제들아 더욱 힘써 너희 부르심과 택하심을 굳게 하라 너희가 이것을 행한즉 언제든지 실족지 아니하리라

11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

11 이같이 하면 우리 주 곧 구주 예수 그리스도의 영원한 나라에 들어감을 넉넉히 너희에게 주시리라

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

로마서 6:22

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

3. Their ability to do good works is not all of themselves, but wholly from the Spirit of Christ;¹⁰ and that they may be enabled thereunto, besides the graces they have already received, there is necessary an actual influence of the same Holy Spirit, to work in them and to will and to do of his good pleasure;¹¹ yet they are not bound to perform any duty, unless upon a special motion of the Spirit, but they ought to be diligent in stirring up the grace of God that is in them.¹²

3. 그들이 선행을 할 수 있는 능력은 전혀 자신에게서 나오지 않고 전적으로 그리스도의 영에게서 나온다.¹⁰ 그러한 능력을 얻으려면 이미 받은 은혜 외에도, 그들이 하나님의 기쁘신 뜻을 따라 원하고 행하도록 그들 안에서 역사하시는 동일한 성령의 실제적인 감화가 필요하다.¹¹ 그러나 이를 구실로, 성령의 특별한 감동이 없으면 어떤 의무도 행할 책임이 없는 것처럼 게을러져서는 안 된다. 오히려 자기 안에 있는 하나님의 은혜를 불러일으키는 일에 부지런해야 한다.¹²

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

히브리서 6:11-12

11 And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

11 우리가 간절히 원하는 것은 너희 각 사람이 동일한 부지런을 나타내어 끝까지 소망의 풍성함에 이르러

12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

12 게으르지 아니하고 믿음과 오래 참음으로 말미암아 약속들을 기업으로 받는 자들을 본받는 자 되게 하려는 것이니라

이사야 64:7

7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

7 주의 이름을 부르는 자가 없으며 스스로 분발하여 주를 붙잡는 자가 없사오니 이는 주께서 우리에게 얼굴을 숨기시며 우리의 죄악을 인하여 우리로 소멸되게 하셨음이니이다

4. They who in their obedience attain to the greatest height which is possible in this life, are so far from being able to supererogate, and to do more than God requires, as that they fall short of much which in duty they are bound to do.¹³

4. 현세에서 가능한 가장 높은 수준의 순종에 이른 사람도, 하나님이 요구하시는 것보다 더 많이 행하여 의무를 초과할 수 있기는커녕, 마땅히 행해야 할 많은 의무에도 미치지 못한다.¹³

5. We cannot by our best works merit pardon of sin or eternal life at the hand of God, by reason of the great disproportion that is between them and the glory to come, and the infinite distance that is between us and God, whom by them we can neither profit nor satisfy for the debt of our former sins;¹⁴ but when we have done all we can, we have done but our duty, and are unprofitable servants; and because they are good they proceed from his Spirit,¹⁵ and as they are wrought by us they are defiled and mixed with so much weekness and imperfection, that they cannot endure the severity of God’s punishment.¹⁶

5. 우리가 행한 최선의 일로도 하나님께 죄 사함이나 영생을 받을 공로를 세울 수 없다. 우리의 행위와 장차 올 영광 사이에는 큰 불균형이 있고, 우리와 하나님 사이에는 무한한 간격이 있기 때문이다. 우리는 선행으로 하나님께 유익을 드리거나 이전 죄의 빚을 갚을 수 없다.¹⁴ 할 수 있는 모든 일을 행한 뒤에도 우리는 의무만을 행한 무익한 종일 뿐이다. 또한 선행이 선한 것은 하나님의 성령에게서 나오기 때문이다.¹⁵ 그러나 우리가 행하는 것으로서는 많은 연약함과 불완전함으로 더럽혀지고 뒤섞여 있어서 하나님의 엄정한 형벌을 견딜 수 없다.¹⁶

6. Yet notwithstanding the persons of believers being accepted through Christ, their good works also are accepted in him;¹⁷ not as though they were in this life wholly unblamable and unreprovable in God’s sight, but that he, looking upon them in his Son, is pleased to accept and reward that which is sincere, although accompanied with many weaknesses and imperfections.¹⁸

6. 그럼에도 신자들 자신이 그리스도를 통하여 받아들여지므로 그들의 선행도 그분 안에서 받아들여진다.¹⁷ 이는 그 선행이 현세에서 하나님 보시기에 전혀 흠이나 책망할 것이 없기 때문이 아니다. 하나님께서는 자기 아들 안에서 그 선행을 보시고, 많은 연약함과 불완전함이 수반되어도 그 안의 진실함을 받아들이시고 상 주시기를 기뻐하시기 때문이다.¹⁸

7. Works done by unregenerate men, although for the matter of them they may be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and to others;¹⁹ yet because they proceed not from a heart purified by faith,²⁰ nor are done in a right manner according to the Word,²¹ nor to a right end, the glory of God,²² they are therfore sinful, and cannot please God, nor make a man meet to receive the grace from God,²³ and yet their neglect for them is more sinful and displeasing to God.²⁴

7. 거듭나지 않은 사람들이 하는 일은 그 내용상 하나님이 명령하신 것일 수 있으며, 자신과 다른 사람에게 유익할 수도 있다.¹⁹ 그러나 믿음으로 깨끗해진 마음에서 나오지 않고,²⁰ 말씀에 따라 올바른 방식으로 행해지지 않으며,²¹ 하나님의 영광이라는 올바른 목적을 향하지도 않으므로,²² 그것들은 죄가 되며 하나님을 기쁘시게 하거나 사람이 하나님께 은혜를 받기에 합당하게 만들 수 없다.²³ 그렇지만 그들이 그러한 일을 소홀히 하는 것은 더욱 죄가 되며 하나님을 더욱 기쁘시지 않게 한다.²⁴
