1. Marriage is to be between one man and one woman; neither is it lawful for any man to have more than one wife, nor for any woman to have more than one husband at the same time.¹

1. 혼인은 한 남자와 한 여자 사이에서 이루어져야 한다. 어떤 남자도 동시에 둘 이상의 아내를 두어서는 안 되며, 어떤 여자도 동시에 둘 이상의 남편을 두어서는 안 된다.¹

2. Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife,² for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue,³ and the preventing of uncleanness.⁴

2. 혼인은 남편과 아내가 서로 돕도록,² 합법적인 자녀를 통해 인류가 증가하도록,³ 그리고 부정한 일을 막도록 제정되었다.⁴

3. It is lawful for all sorts of people to marry, who are able with judgment to give their consent;⁵ yet it is the duty of Christians to marry in the Lord;⁶ and therefore such as profess the true religion, should not marry with infidels, or idolaters; neither should such as are godly, be unequally yoked, by marrying with such as are wicked in their life, or maintain damnable heresy.⁷

3. 판단력을 가지고 동의할 수 있는 모든 부류의 사람은 정당하게 혼인할 수 있다.⁵ 그러나 그리스도인은 주 안에서 혼인할 의무가 있다.⁶ 그러므로 참된 신앙을 고백하는 사람은 불신자나 우상숭배자와 혼인해서는 안 된다. 또한 경건한 사람은 삶이 악한 자나 멸망에 이르게 하는 이단을 고수하는 자와 혼인하여, 서로 맞지 않는 멍에를 메어서도 안 된다.⁷

디모데전서 4:3

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

고린도전서 7:39

39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

39 아내가 그 남편이 살 동안에 매여 있다가 남편이 죽으면 자유하여 자기 뜻대로 시집 갈것이나 주 안에서만 할 것이니라

느헤미야 13:25-27

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

25 내가 책망하고 저주하며 두어 사람을 때리고 그 머리 털을 뽑고 이르되 너희는 너희 딸들로 저희 아들들에게 주지 말고 너희 아들들이나 너희를 위하여 저희 딸을 데려오지 않겠다고 하나님을 가리켜 맹세하라 하고

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

26 또 이르기를 옛적에 이스라엘 왕 솔로몬이 이 일로 범죄하지 아니하였느냐 저는 열국 중에 비길 왕이 없이 하나님의 사랑을 입은 자라 하나님이 저로 왕을 삼아 온 이스라엘을 다스리게 하셨으나 이방 여인이 저로 범죄케 하였나니

27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

27 너희가 이방 여인을 취하여 크게 악을 행하여 우리 하나님께 범죄하는 것을 우리가 어찌 용납하겠느냐

4. Marriage ought not to be within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity, forbidden in the Word;⁸ nor can such incestuous marriages ever be made lawful, by any law of man or consent of parties, so as those persons may live together as man and wife.⁹

4. 말씀에서 금지한 촌수 안의 혈족이나 인척 사이에서는 혼인해서는 안 된다.⁸ 그러한 근친혼은 어떤 인간의 법이나 당사자들의 동의로도 정당화될 수 없으며, 그들이 부부로 함께 살도록 허용할 수 없다.⁹
