XXVIII. Of Baptism

1. Baptism is a sacrament of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ,^a not only for the solemn admission of the party baptized into the visible Church,^b but also to be unto him a sign and seal of the covenant of grace,^c of his ingrafting into Christ,^d of regeneration,^e of remission of sins,^f and of his giving up unto God, through Jesus Christ, to walk in newness of life:^g which sacrament is, by Christ’s own appointment, to be continued in his Church until the end of the world.^h

1. 세례는 예수 그리스도께서 제정하신 신약의 성례이다.^a 이는 세례받는 사람을 보이는 교회에 엄숙히 받아들이기 위한 것일 뿐 아니라,^b 그에게 은혜 언약의 표와 인이 되고,^c 그리스도께 접붙임 받음과^d 거듭남과^e 죄 사함과^f 예수 그리스도를 통하여 새 생명 가운데 살도록 자신을 하나님께 드림의 표와 인이 되게 하려는 것이다.^g 이 성례는 그리스도 자신의 명령에 따라 세상 끝까지 그분의 교회 안에서 계속 시행되어야 한다.^h

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

고린도전서 12:13

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

13 우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유자나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었고 또 다 한 성령을 마시게 하셨느니라

로마서 4:11

11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

11 저가 할례의 표를 받은 것은 무할례시에 믿음으로 된 의를 인친 것이니 이는 무할례자로서 믿는 모든 자의 조상이 되어 저희로 의로 여기심을 얻게 하려 하심이라

골로새서 2:11-12

11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

11 또 그 안에서 너희가 손으로 하지 아니한 할례를 받았으니 곧 육적 몸을 벗는 것이요 그리스도의 할례니라

12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

로마서 6:5

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

갈라디아서 3:27

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

디도서 3:5

5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

5 우리를 구원하시되 우리의 행한바 의로운 행위로 말미암지 아니하고 오직 그의 긍휼하심을 좇아 중생의 씻음과 성령의 새롭게 하심으로 하셨나니

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

로마서 6:3-4

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

3 무릇 그리스도 예수와 합하여 세례를 받은 우리는 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례 받은 줄을 알지 못하느뇨

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

4 그러므로 우리가 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이니라

마태복음 28:19-20

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

19 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 족속으로 제자를 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주고

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

20 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼찌어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라

2. The outward element to be used in this sacrament is water, wherewith the party is to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, by a minister of the gospel lawfully called thereunto.^a

2. 이 성례에서 사용할 외적 요소는 물이다. 이를 위하여 합법적으로 부르심을 받은 복음의 사역자는 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 물로 세례를 베풀어야 한다.^a

3. Dipping of the person into the water is not necessary; but baptism is rightly administered by pouring or sprinkling water upon the person.^a

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

히브리서 9:10, 19-22

10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

10 이런 것은 먹고 마시는 것과 여러가지 씻는 것과 함께 육체의 예법만 되어 개혁할 때까지 맡겨 둔 것이니라

19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

21 또한 이와 같이 피로써 장막과 섬기는 일에 쓰는 모든 그릇에 뿌렸느니라

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

22 율법을 좇아 거의 모든 물건이 피로써 정결케 되나니 피흘림이 없은즉 사함이 없느니라

4. Not only those that do actually profess faith in and obedience unto Christ,^a but also the infants of one or both believing parents are to be baptized.^b

4. 그리스도에 대한 믿음과 순종을 실제로 고백하는 사람들뿐 아니라,^a 부모 중 한 사람 또는 두 사람 모두가 신자인 경우 그들의 유아들도 세례를 받아야 한다.^b

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

16 믿고 세례를 받는 사람은 구원을 얻을 것이요 믿지 않는 사람은 정죄를 받으리라

사도행전 8:37-38

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

창세기 17:7, 9

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

7 내가 내 언약을 나와 너와 네 대대 후손의 사이에 세워서 영원한 언약을 삼고 너와 네 후손의 하나님이 되리라

9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

9 하나님이 또 아브라함에게 이르시되 그런즉 너는 내 언약을 지키고 네 후손도 대대로 지키라

갈라디아서 3:9, 14

9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

9 그러므로 믿음으로 말미암은 자는 믿음이 있는 아브라함과 함께 복을 받느니라

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

14 이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 아브라함의 복이 이방인에게 미치게 하고 또 우리로 하여금 믿음으로 말미암아 성령의 약속을 받게 하려 함이니라

골로새서 2:11-12

38 베드로가 가로되 너희가 회개하여 각각 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 세례를 받고 죄 사함을 얻으라 그리하면 성령을 선물로 받으리니

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

39 이 약속은 너희와 너희 자녀와 모든 먼데 사람 곧 주 우리 하나님이 얼마든지 부르시는 자들에게 하신 것이라 하고

로마서 4:11-12

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

12 또한 할례자의 조상이 되었나니 곧 할례 받을 자에게 뿐아니라 우리 조상 아브라함의 무할례시에 가졌던 믿음의 자취를 좇는 자들에게도니라

마태복음 28:19

마가복음 10:13-16

13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

13 사람들이 예수의 만져주심을 바라고 어린 아이들을 데리고 오매 제자들이 꾸짖거늘

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

14 예수께서 보시고 분히 여겨 이르시되 어린 아이들의 내게 오는 것을 용납하고 금하지 말라 하나님의 나라가 이런 자의 것이니라

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

15 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 누구든지 하나님의 나라를 어린 아이와 같이 받들지 않는 자는 결단코 들어가지 못하리라 하시고

16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

16 그 어린 아이들을 안고 저희 위에 안수하시고 축복하시니라

15 And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

15 사람들이 예수의 만져 주심을 바라고 자기 어린 아기를 데리고 오매 제자들이 보고 꾸짖거늘

고린도전서 7:14

14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

14 믿지 아니하는 남편이 아내로 인하여 거룩하게 되고 믿지 아니하는 아내가 남편으로 인하여 거룩하게 되나니 그렇지 아니하면 너희 자녀도 깨끗지 못하니라 그러나 이제 거룩하니라

5. Although it be a great sin to contemn or neglect this ordinance,^a yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed unto it, as that no person can be regenerated or saved without it,^b or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated.^c

5. 이 규례를 멸시하거나 소홀히 하는 것은 큰 죄이다.^a 그러나 은혜와 구원이 세례에 불가분하게 묶여 있어서 세례 없이는 아무도 거듭나거나 구원받을 수 없는 것은 아니며,^b 세례받은 모든 사람이 의심의 여지 없이 거듭난 것도 아니다.^c

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.

25 십보라가 차돌을 취하여 그 아들의 양피를 베어 모세의 발 앞에 던지며 가로되 당신은 참으로 내게 피 남편이로다 하니

26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

22 저희가 대답하되 백부장 고넬료는 의인이요 하나님을 경외하는 자라 유대 온 족속이 칭찬하더니 저가 거룩한 천사의 지시를 받아 너를 그 집으로 청하여 말을 들으려 하느니라 한대

31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

31 말하되 고넬료야 하나님이 네 기도를 들으시고 네 구제를 기억하셨으니

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

45 베드로와 함께 온 할례 받은 신자들이 이방인들에게도 성령 부어 주심을 인하여 놀라니

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

13 시몬도 믿고 세례를 받은 후에 전심으로 빌립을 따라 다니며 그 나타나는 표적과 큰 능력을 보고 놀라니라

23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

23 내가 보니 너는 악독이 가득하며 불의에 매인바 되었도다

6. The efficacy of baptism is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administered;^a yet, notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the Holy Ghost, to such (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth unto, according to the counsel of God’s own will, in his appointed time.^b

6. 세례의 효력은 그것이 시행되는 그 순간에 매여 있지 않다.^a 그럼에도 이 규례를 바르게 사용할 때, 약속된 은혜는 단지 제시되기만 하는 것이 아니라 성령에 의하여 실제로 나타나고 주어진다. 이는 성인이든 유아이든 그 은혜가 속한 사람들에게, 하나님의 뜻의 계획에 따라 그분이 정하신 때에 이루어진다.^b

7. The sacrament of baptism is but once to be administered to any person.^a
