믿는 자들은 죄에 대해 죽고 하나님께 대해 살아야 함. (1,2) 이는 그들의 기독교 세례와 그리스도와의 연합으로 촉구됨. (3-10) 그들이 하나님께 대해 살아나다. (11-15) 그리고 죄의 지배에서 자유롭게 되다. (16-20) 죄의 끝은 사망이요, 거룩함의 끝은 영생임. (21-23)
