인사, 하나님의 영원한 택하심 안에서 예비되고 그리스도의 피로 값 주고 사신 구원의 복들에 대한 설명. (1-8) 그리고 유효한 부르심 안에서 전달됨: 이것이 믿는 유대인과 믿는 이방인에게 적용되다. (9-14) 사도가 그들의 믿음과 사랑에 대해 하나님께 감사하며, 하늘의 유업과 그들 안에서의 하나님의 능력 있는 역사에 관하여 그들의 지식과 소망이 지속되기를 기도하다. (15-23)

2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.	2 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로 좇아 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 있을찌어다

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:	3 찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복으로 우리에게 복 주시되

4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:	4 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고

5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,	5 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 자기의 아들들이 되게 하셨으니

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.	6 이는 그의 사랑하시는 자 안에서 우리에게 거저 주시는바 그의 은혜의 영광을 찬미하게 하려는 것이라

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;	7 우리가 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 구속 곧 죄 사함을 받았으니

8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;	8 이는 그가 모든 지혜와 총명으로 우리에게 넘치게 하사

9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:	9 그 뜻의 비밀을 우리에게 알리셨으니 곧 그 기쁘심을 따라 그리스도 안에서 때가 찬 경륜을 위하여 예정하신 것이니

10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:	10 하늘에 있는 것이나 땅에 있는 것이 다 그리스도 안에서 통일되게 하려 하심이라

11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:	11 모든 일을 그 마음의 원대로 역사하시는 자의 뜻을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니

12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.	12 이는 그리스도 안에서 전부터 바라던 우리로 그의 영광의 찬송이 되게 하려 하심이라

13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,	13 그 안에서 너희도 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았으니

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.	14 이는 우리의 기업에 보증이 되사 그 얻으신 것을 구속하시고 그의 영광을 찬미하게 하려 하심이라

15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,	15 이를 인하여 주 예수 안에서 너희 믿음과 모든 성도를 향한 사랑을 나도 듣고

16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;	16 너희를 인하여 감사하기를 마지아니하고 내가 기도할 때에 너희를 말하노라

17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:	17 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님, 영광의 아버지께서 지혜와 계시의 정신을 너희에게 주사 하나님을 알게 하시고

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,	18 너희 마음눈을 밝히사 그의 부르심의 소망이 무엇이며 성도 안에서 그 기업의 영광의 풍성이 무엇이며

19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,	19 그의 힘의 강력으로 역사하심을 따라 믿는 우리에게 베푸신 능력의 지극히 크심이 어떤 것을 너희로 알게 하시기를 구하노라

20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,	20 그 능력이 그리스도 안에서 역사하사 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리시고 하늘에서 자기의 오른편에 앉히사

21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:	21 모든 정사와 권세와 능력과 주관하는 자와 이 세상뿐 아니라 오는 세상에 일컫는 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나게 하시고

22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,	22 또 만물을 그 발 아래 복종하게 하시고 그를 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 주셨느니라

23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.	23 교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만케 하시는 자의 충만이니라

KJV의 영어(1611년~)는 셰익스피어의 영어문장처럼 현대 영문법과 약간 다릅니다. 하지만 몇 가지 차이만 알면 오히려 요즘 영어문장보다 더 정확한 내용 이해와 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있습니다.

상대편(2인칭)에게 말할 때 단수, 복수를 구분합니다. 복수(너희)이면 ye, you, your, yours, yourself를, 단수(너)이면 thou, thee, thy, thine, thyself입니다. 요즘 영어와 달리 "너"와 "너희"가 명확히 구분됩니다!
3인칭 현재동사는 -th나 -eth로 끝나는데 요즘 영어문장에서 -s나 -es와 같습니다.
-st나 -est로 끝나는 동사는 직설법을 말하는 데, 생략하고 읽으면 됩니다.
